AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
Tax assistance for anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income. You don’t need to be an AARP member to use their service. Find a location near you.
IRS Free File
If your adjusted gross income is $84,000 or less. If higher, you can use Free File Fillable Forms.
IRS Resources for Military PersonneL
Current and form members of the U.S. Armed Forces have special tax situations and benefits. The IRS provides many resources to help understand how to file and pay taxes.
IRS’ VITA Program
The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is for people who earn $67,000 or less, have a disability, are 60 years or older, or need language support. You can find a VITA provider near you at IRS VITA Site Locator.
MyFreeTaxes from United Way
Helps people who earn $84,000 or less file their taxes for free with their self-preparation software when you select the “File My Own Taxes” option.
Prepare + Prosper
Free tax preparation by appointment provided for families and individuals who meet their income requirements. Use their online screener to determine eligibility and check their schedule.
Earned Income Tax Credit
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps workers and families with low-to-moderate income get a tax break. If you qualify, you can use the credit to reduce the taxes you owe — and possibly even increase your refund. If you have children, dependents, have a disability, or meet other criteria, you may qualify for more of the EITC.
Visit the IRS’ website to learn more about the EITC. Use their EITC Assistant to find out if you qualify and to estimate your credit amount.
