Rental Assistance

Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County’s (CAP-HC’s) Rental Assistance program can help pay your past-due rent or security deposit. This assistance can ensure you and your family have stable housing, even during a financial crisis.

We process applications in the order they are received. Right now, staff are working on applications sent in the week of:

Eligibility

You’re eligible for Rental Assistance if you meet the following requirements:

  1. You live in Hennepin County.
  2. You do not receive any rental subsidy or housing voucher, like MPHA or Section 8.
  3. Your rent is past due, and you are still living in the unit you are requesting Rental Assistance for.
  4. You have household income that is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level Income Guidelines — see table.
  5. If seeking security deposit assistance: You have a denial letter from Hennepin County Emergency Assistance or other rental assistance provider.

Please note: Applicants may only apply for CAP-HC’s Rental Assistance program once every 24 months.

How to Submit Your Application

You can submit your completed application and additional documentation in one of the following ways:

We will review your application materials and follow up with you for next steps.

What are the qualifications for Rental Assistance?

Can I apply for Rental Assistance if I receive section 8 subsidy?

No, households that receive a rental subsidy, such as an MPHA or Section 8, are not eligible for Rental Assistance.

What is the maximum amount of Rental Assistance grants?

Rental Assistance grants pay up to $1,000 per household for eviction prevention or security deposit assistance.

We do not assist with mortgage payments at this time.

How long will it take to process my Rental Assistance application?


It can take 60 days or more to process complete Rental Assistance applications. Processing time depends on how many applications we receive.

  • If your application is incomplete, processing will be delayed.
  • If your application is approved, please allow an additional 30 days to process your payment.
Can I check the status of my application?

We do not have an automated way for you to check application status at this time. The Rental Assistance page of our website includes the received-by date of applications we are processing currently.

A staff member will let you know via email, phone, or mail when your application is ready to be processed.

What happens after I submit my application?
  • CAP-HC staff will review your application to determine whether it is complete.
  • We will notify you if:
    • Your application is incomplete.
    • Your application indicates that you are not eligible for Rental Assistance.
  • We process complete applications in the order they are received.
  • If your application is approved, you and your landlord will be notified via email.
How often can I apply for CAP-HC’s Rental Assistance program?

You may apply for our Rental Assistance Program once every 24 months.

If you have an active eviction summons, please contact Hennepin County or Community Mediation & Restorative Services for assistance.
