Client Stories
For 40 years, Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County (CAP-HC) has worked alongside families with low incomes to reduce the impact of poverty and expand economic opportunity. Here are some stories our clients have shared with us over the years.

Rosa’s Story
As temperatures drop, so does a sense of security for many families struggling to afford heat and electricity. For Rosa, CAP-HC’s Energy Assistance Program was more than help with a bill—it was an opportunity to take charge of her finances and build toward a brighter future.

Lee’s Story
Lee was first connected with CAP-HC through the Energy
Assistance Program. Then we reached out to Lee with information about CAP-HC’s new Solar Program in partnership with Minnesota-based All Energy Solar. After evaluating his home and energy needs to ensure solar power was feasible, the team moved forward with system design, permits, and installation.
The support has provided real peace of mind. Instead of worrying about how to pay for health insurance and other bills, Lee shared, “with a solar panel system installed, my electricity is pretty much free. Lower energy bills allow me to pay for other things.” He added, “Everyone I’ve been in contact with at CAP-HC has been great to work with.”
Through innovative partnerships like these, CAP-HC continues to help individuals and families move from crisis to stability—and toward a more sustainable future.

Pamela’s Story
CAP-HC and Renewal Experts Construction partnered for a Kitchen Remodel Giveaway for one deserving family. This project was more than a renovation—it was a symbol of hope …

Sally’s Story
Sally needed help with her utility bills. When a friend told her about CAP-HC, she applied for energy assistance. Sally said the assistance she received alleviated her stress, adding that the Energy Assistance Program is a “wonderful program for low-income seniors.”
Later Sally’s furnace wasn’t working—a dangerous
situation to be in during a Minnesota winter. In her
hour of need she turned to our Energy-Related Repair Program. “CAP-HC has helped me in many ways … most of all by putting a new motor on my furnace. I am so grateful that I can turn to CAP-HC and know that there is always someone who is happy to listen to me. [These programs have] made it possible for me to stay in my home.”

Sheyenne’s Story
One thing that makes CAP-HC’s anti-poverty work unique is that our suite of services meet people wherever they are on their journey to self-sufficiency—from navigating crisis situations to building prosperity. This often means that people are able to utilize multiple services, getting the support they need holistically.
Sheyenne initially sought out CAP-HC for Energy Assistance. Then she turned to our Rental Counseling Program for help. “My experience with CAP-HC
has exceeded expectations. [Both programs have] not only helped my family through tough times, but have done so with grace. I felt like the employees genuinely
cared about making our situation better. Thank you!”

John’s Story
“I received help through CAP-HC with both their Energy Assistance and Vehicle Repair Programs.
At the onset of the pandemic, I had lost my job. With it being a very emotionally, physically, and financially difficult and challenging year for me, it was such a huge relief and tremendous help to know that I was going to be able to keep my house heated through the winter and have one less monthly bill to worry about.
The Vehicle Repair Program came at just the right time. My older car was beginning to be unsafe to drive. The program helped repair the broken driver’s window, replace my worn out tires , and fix the suspension—right before a big ice storm. I don’t live near an easily accessible bus route, so being able to use my car is really important to me … The staff were really wonderful and responsive to work with!”

Shanda’s Story
“Rapid rehousing has helped me regain stability in my
life. I was in a homeless shelter when I found out about
[CAP-HC] and from the beginning there was nothing but
support and assistance from them. They helped me get out of the shelter and get my own apartment … I have been able to gain financial control and housing stability.”
